It sits in a quiet hamlet a few minutes’ drive from the magnificent Château de Puilaurens, which is an ideal starting point to explore the mysteries of the medieval Cathars. There are many spectacular hikes in the area, including the Forêt d’en Malo trail from the hamlet, as well as several nearby gorges. There is also some of the best cycling and rafting anywhere in France.
The region offers excellent wines and there are plenty of good restaurants dotted around. An open-top tourist train, the Train Rouge, departs from nearby Axat. Further afield, the medieval fortress of Carcassonne and the beautiful Mediterranean town of Collioure both make for an easy day trip.
